Nigerian Army confirms the name of the rescued Chibok girl, shares more details

There was slight confusion when the Army initially confirmed that they had indeed rescued one of the abducted Chibok school girls, named Falmata Mbalala. This was contrary to reports that the girl was actually Amina Ali. The Army have corrected the mistake and released a more detailed statement. Read after the cut...

• Please recall that we informed you that one of  the abducted Chibok school girls has been rescued earlier today and promised to give further details. Further to that, in continuation of Operation CRACKDOWN, troops of 25 Brigade Damboa in conjunction with Civilian JTF deployed in one of the blocking positions at Baale, near Damboa rescued one Miss Amina Ali  and a suspected Boko Haram terrorist, Mohammed Hayatu, who claimed to be her husband. Both were brought to Headquarters 25 Task Force Brigade Damboa at about 2.30pm today.
Preliminary investigation shows that she is indeed one of the abducted Chibok School girls abducted by Boko Haram terrorists on 14th April 2014 in Chibok and her name is Amina Ali as against Falmata Mbalala that was earlier stated. In addition, she is a nursing mother with a 4 month old baby girl who was named Safiya. Both the suspected Boko Haram terrorist and the nursing mother have been taken to Maiduguri for further medical attention and screening.
Thank you for your usual cooperation.

Photo: Two female accident victims are fighting for their lives at a hospital in Aba following auto crash

Two women are currently fighting for their lives at MAZPA Specialist Hospital, Ukaegbu road, following a road accident involving a commercial bus and a Mack Truck.

According to The Nation, the accident which occurred at about 3am Tuesday morning involved a commercial bus with Reg. number Abia 288 YG carrying seven passengers, heading into Aba, Abia State from Akwa Ibom State, and a Mack Truck with Reg number Rivers XY 713 PHC belonging to a yet-to-be identified construction company.
"Eyewitnesses said they were attracted by the loud bang and on realizing it was an accident, rushed to the scene and assisted to take the injured victims to the nearby hospital where they until this report were receiving treatment.
While two out of the victims were lying unconscious in their respective hospital beds due to the impact of the accident and severity of their injury while filing this report, others with minor cuts were nursing their injury at the reception hall of the hospital.
Narrating how the incident happened to our reporter, Patience Abanjoubo said that they were coming from Uruakpa, Akwa Ibom State to go to Good Morning Market in Aba to sell Palm oil, fruits and vegetables that they harvested from their farms.
Abanjoubo further stated that the driver of the commercial bus was subsequently taken into custody by the police."
While attributing the accident to over-speeding and carelessness of the driver, the Aba Unit Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), ACP Okora Awassam, however, blamed the inability of the said construction company’s driver to put caution sign at the back of the truck to warn other drivers of the spoilt truck.
Awassam warned both commercial and private individual drivers against over speeding especially at sharp bending corners and to overtake when the road is safe enough for them to do so. She also said that they would continue to monitor how the patients are responding to treatment.

Okupe confirms Jonathan paid Metuh N400m..said amount came from ex-president’s N21bn campaign funds

The former Senor Special Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr Doyin Okupe, told Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja on Wednesday that Jonathan confirmed to him that he gave the sum of N400 million to Chief Olisa Metuh, the National Publicity Secretary of PDP.

He said the amount was to enable Metuh carry out the much desired image and pulbic perception enhancement for the former President before his public declaration ahead of the 2015 general election.

Okupe, who stated this while testifying in the trial of Metuh on allegations of receiving the sum of N400m from the office of former NSA Sambo Dasuki, told the court that Jonathan released the sum to Metuh following his (Metuh’s) presentation on ways to shore up the dwindled image of the former president preparatory for the official launch of his campaign.

He said Metuh and his team made a presentation alongside other consultants in a meeting attended by members of the Presidential Campaign Council including the president himself, his Vice, Namadi Sambo, the former National Chairman of the party, Adamu Mu'azu, former Senate President, David Mark, and former governors Liyel Imoke and Peter Obi among others.

Led in evidence by Onyechi Ikpeazu, the lead defence counsel, Okupe said “Yes, around that time (November 2014) there was very deep concern in the Presidency and the government about the perception of Mr President and his administration, negative perception by the Nigerian public. This also included some perceived ineffectiveness of the administration and also a wrong perception in some parts of the country about the role of government and its actions or activities concerning the very security situation in the country then.

“Therefore, in government, there was a general feeling that some actions needed to be taken urgently to address these issues, especially because of the coming elections.

“It was in the course of my discussion with Mr President when I also expressed my own personal concerns too that he informed me that Chief Olisah Metuh had some suggestions and that he (Jonathan) had instructed him to bring a proposition on what he considered needed to be done and that when this is done, he would inform me so that we can go through it together.

“Shortly after that, I was invited to a meeting in the State house where Chief Metuh in company of some consultants made presentations to the president. After the presentations, there were comments form those in attendance to add or improve in certain areas where they felt was important. The presentation was approved for action and the President said Mr. Metuh will be given part of the money that was in budget for the execution of the project.

On how he knew that the Jonathan gave Metuh the money, Okupe said:

“Yes, I know from two sources. First was the President himself who told me that he had instructed that Chief Metuh be mobilised. And that was during breakfast with Mr. President one morning. He told me that he had instructed that Chief Metuh be mobilised with N400 million. The following day, very early in the morning, I got a call from Chief Metuh who told me that he has received N400 million from the President.

Under cross-examination by EFCC counsel Sylvanus Tahir, the witness denied knowledge that the former NSA was the source of the money.

"I have seen the payment mandate from the office of the former NSA to Destra but this thing does not make any meaning to me. I want you to explain what is. I have already stated that the President confirmed to me that he gave the N400 million to Metuh.

He said as the leader of the party and its presidential candidate, the president enjoys tremendous goodwill, which was demonstrated at the fundraising ceremony organised at the Villa before the election where the sum of N21 billion, and sums from other private sources where raised.

“The president uses his tremendous goodwill, which he has, to assist his party or help to execute special programmes that are aimed at improving the fortunes the party and the government. It is natural that such payments (Metuh's) would have come from the various amounts of money he has received as donations towards his campaign”, he said.

Okupe further told the court that upon being mobilized, Metuh assembled a very large committee of various people, including media experts who he said did quite substantial amount of work, some of which were security related while others had to do with the image of the President and the government.

Justice Okon Abang adjourned the case to Thursday.

Nigeria made faster progress against Boko Haram after curbing corruption in military – Buhari

President Buhari today said the success recorded by the military against the Boko Haram sect in recent times can be traced to the fight against corruption in the military. According to him, corruption was largely responsible for the inability of the Nigerian military to quickly defeat Boko Haram.

Buhari said this while speaking with Egypt’s Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed El-Tayeb who paid him a visit at the state house Abuja today May 18th.

“When we curbed corruption and removed the injustice in the military, we began to make progress,’’ he said.
President Buhari stressed it was against Islam to carry out terror in God's name. He noted that the war against terrorism was also a war against injustice, and must be supported by Islam and all the major religions.
“You can’t kill the innocent in churches or in mosques and shout Allahu Akbar,’’ he said.

Fitness model Chontel Duncan shares her post-baby belly from 5 days to 7 weeks after giving birth

Fitness model Chontel Duncan, who documented her baby bump in mirror selfies all through her pregnancy has been sharing her post-baby body since welcoming her baby boy, named Jeremiah.
Duncan, who delivered her son Jeremiah by C-section 7 weeks ago, wrote on Instagram, five days after birth:
"Bump update 40 weeks... 5 days post delivery. Little D now known as Jeremiah 'MIAH' came 39weeks 2days (as you all would have noticed). My body is tender, it feels like someone did 12 rounds in the boxing ring using my core as the target. So much swelling is yet to go down & so much healing is yet to happen. I haven't seen my GP yet to see how my first week of healing has gone but when i do, it'll be then that I will be able to see a goal ahead with my healing process. The midwife & nurses follow up went well so fingers crossed i have a speedy recovery & continue on the straight road ahead. It's super crazy how different my body feels, I can't believe my bump is gone & I no longer have my baby hiding inside of me. To a degree I miss it but reality of actually having Miah in my arms is so much better. I wonder because I can't get back into training for a longer period of time how my body will change through purely just recovery/rest and nutrition... I'm excited because it gives me more time with Miah lol I'm an obsessive new mummy!!! Miah has settled in like a champ, feeds really well & sleeps heaps. I am so grateful to have had such a healthy happy baby. Looking forward to learning more about parenthood and to see the changes in my body as time persists"
The fitness model has been updating her Instagram with her progress.

Owner of Kenyan collapsed building arrested

The owner of a building which collapsed in Kenya’s capital Nairobi on Friday, killing at least 21 people, has been arrested, police told the BBC.

Samuel Karanja Kamau would appear in court on Tuesday, police added.

Earlier, officials said he did not have permission to rent out 119 rooms in the six-storey building.

Mr. Kamau has not yet commented on the allegation.

More than 90 people are still feared trapped beneath the rubble, BBC reports.

About 135 people, according to local media, have been freed so far from the collapsed building.

The governor of Nairobi, Evans Kidero, said that officials who approved the construction of the building in the poor neighbourhood of Huruma would be sacked.

Three days of rainfall caused landslides and flooded roads in Nairobi.

More than 800 homes were affected by the flooding, Kenya’s Red Cross said.

It criticized “chaotic scenes” as rescuers arrived after the Friday night collapse.

Trump accuses China of trade ‘rape’

Republican presidential front-runner, Donald Trump, has accused China of “raping” the United States, in renewed criticism of China’s trade policy.

He told a rally in Indiana that China was responsible for “the greatest theft in the history of the world.”

Mr. Trump, a billionaire businessman, has long accused China of manipulating its currency to make its exports more competitive globally, the BBC reports.

This, he says, has badly damaged U.S businesses and workers.

“We can’t continue to allow China to rape our country, and that’s what we’re doing,” he told the campaign rally on Sunday.

“We’re going to turn it around, and we have the cards, don’t forget it,” he added. “We have a lot of power with China.”

Mr. Trump, in his campaign manifesto, pledges to “cut a better deal with China that helps American businesses and workers compete.”

He sets out four goals that include immediately declaring China “a currency manipulator” and putting “an end to China’s illegal export subsidies and lax labour and environmental standards.”

Figures from the U.S government show the annual trade deficit with China was at an all-time high of $365.7bn (£250.1bn) last year.

Abia: Police recovers more vehicles stolen by fake soldier

Abia: Police recovers more vehicles stolen by fake soldier

The Abia state Commissioner of Police (CP), Joshak Habila said that his command has recovered two more vehicles which were stolen by a fake army officer, Ahanna Chinagorom Ogwezi from car shops, who wears army uniform to dupe people.

Speaking in Umuahia while parading some armed robbery suspects, Habila said that his command has been doing a follow up on the case of the fake army officer, who was paraded by him in January this year.

Habila said that his men have recovered a black Toyota Avalon (Sport) 2004 model, which was stolen from a custom officer in Onitsha, Anambra state in December last year and sold to one Japhet at Owerri.

The Abia CP said that the suspect had sold the car to Japhet at the cost of eight hundred and fifty thousand naira (N850, 000), adding that the fake soldiers used fake custom documents to sell the car.

He said that the police have also recovered a Lincoln MKX SUV black colour belonging to Bright Oranta, which was stolen at Asaba, Delta state and sold to Pastor Olatunde in Calabar, Cross River state at the cost of N4.3 million, adding that the car was stolen from Ikechukwu who is car dealer.

Habila said that a Toyota Highlander SUV which was stolen in Enugu in 2013 from the owner, Tony Mba and sold to one Kingsley in Warri Delta state, stressing that Kingsley later sold the car to one Pastor Yomi in Port Harcourt at the cost of N2.8 million, “From whose possession the vehicle was recovered”.

It could be recalled that the fake soldier who specializes in stealing of exotic cars from car shops while wearing military uniform is currently facing charges at the court.

While parading the armed robbery suspects, Habila said that a sister security agency in the state transferred to the command three suspected armed robbers, Chimnonso Ikpegbu aka Ojingwa, Emeka Acha aka Osuofia and Chijioke Kingsley Ifeanyi.

The CP said that three were arrested on the allegation of being car snatching syndicate, “The suspects are ex-convicts have been involved in series of car snatching incidents on gun point and Ikpegbu and Acha have confessed to the crimes”.

Habila said that during interrogation that Ikpegbu led the team to Ndoro in Ikwuano local government area of the state, “Where a locally made pistol was recovered in a kiosk, while efforts are being made to recover the stolen vehicles”.

PDP crisis deepens over congresses in Anambra

PDP crisis deepens over congresses in Anambra

The crisis tearing the People’s Democratic Party (PDP apart in Anambra state is yet to abate, as different groups sing discordant tones over the botched ward congresses at the weekend.

While the chairman of the party in the state, Ejike Oguebego who addressed reporters on Sunday, said the congress did not hold anywhere in the state, some of the opposition members said it held.

The chairman of the eleven man congress committee, Hon. Ladi Edun was said to have absconded leaving behind the other members of the committee in Awka, Anambra state.

The Nation gathered Monday that the two senators representing the state, Stella Oduah and Andy Uba are in the same camp, while Senator Annie Okonkwo and Chief Chris Uba are in the other camp.

It was also gathered that the national publicity secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh is also fighting in favour of the two senators while former Governor, Peter Obi is sitting on the fence.

Furthermore, it was gathered that Edun made away with the electoral materials to please his sponsors, while the members of his committee and PDP members who had come out for the exercise were left stranded in the state.

As at the time of filling this report yesterday, the congress committee chairman’s line was not going to ascertain the reason behind his action.

But a senior member of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who spoke with The Nation in Awka Monday, said the commission did not monitor any congress in the state.

The INEC officer, who spoke in confidence, said they were tired of the antics of PDP in Anambra state, adding that the commission was ready to monitor their congress anytime it was fixed.

However, PDP state chairman, Oguebego called the national leadership of the party led by Alhaji Bunu Sheriff to send another person to conduct the congress in the state.

He said the members of the party were ready for the exercise, as they equally came out in their numbers last weekend without success.

Oguebego, however appealed to the members to be law abiding, adding that they should not do anything that could ridicule the party.

Minimum wage: Edo wage increase is Greek gift – PDP

Minimum wage: Edo wage increase is Greek gift - PDP

Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the increment of the minimum wage in the state as a Greek gift and something that was coming late.

It said Governor Adams Oshiomhole took politics too far when it announced a minimum wage increase for government workers from N18, 000 to N25, 000.

The party noted that Governor Oshiomhole’s action was hasty and a betrayal of trust as it was done at a time the national leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) was negotiating a N56, 000 minimum wage for civil servants.

State chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, who stated this in a press statement issued in Benin City said the real challenge in the state civil service was about recruiting people into the service and not about deceiving the people with unrealistic wage increase.

Orbih stated that political appointees of the governor were on the increase while civil servants have continually dwindled owing to death of workers and retirement of existing workers without replacing them.

According to him, “This is a Greek gift to Edo workers considering the fact that the governor has continually neglected workers’ welfare and treated them with disdain before now. Who does not know the motive behind this fake gesture that is coming at a time every state in the federation is facing economic recession?

“As at the time of the windfall, he (Oshiomhole) didn’t pay workers for many months. Right now, local government workers are being owed over six months’ salary. Retirees’ pensions and entitlements are also not being paid under Oshiomhole’s watch.”

“We are beginning to see Oshiomhole as a slave driver going by his policy on workers’ welfare. Here is a governor who has never recruited workers into the civil service since he became governor, but is now talking about salary increase in the twilight of his administration.”

“We challenge the governor to pay outstanding salary arrears, pensions and other entitlements of workers rather than talk about a N25, 000 minimum wage. We challenge him to free the local governments from the bondage he has put them.”

Eagles: Sponsor ‘develops cold feet’ over foreign coach

Eagles: Sponsor 'develops cold feet' over foreign coach

There are indications that Nigeria may be forced to settle for a local coach for the Super Eagles next month after a proposed company to foot the bills of an expatriate handler “developed cold feet”.

According to AfricanFootball.com, it was gathered that the recent leadership tussle in Nigerian football may have thrown the oil company off forking out close to $2 million spread over two years for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to hire a top-rated foreign coach.

“The oil company was ready to give the NFF close to $100,000 a month to take care of a top foreign coach and his assistants, but since the latest round of instability in the Nigerian football polity, the company has developed cold feet,” a top source told AfricanFootball.com.

“The NFF on their own do not have the cash to pay for such a coach and the government through the sports minister has made it very clear it will not pay for a foreign coach.

“That could well have informed the NFF recent announcement that the vacant Super Eagles top post will be taken up by the best candidate whether he is local or foreign.”

Sunday Oliseh quit the post in February for Samson Siasia to take temporary charge of the Eagles for the AFCON 2017 qualifiers against Egypt in March.

Former Kano Pillars and Enyimba coach Salisu Yusuf will be in interim charge for two friendlies against Mali on May 27 and Luxembourg on June 1.

The NFF has disclosed a new Eagles coach will be named next month after shortlisted candidates are be interviewed.

Mikel not ready to quit Chelsea

Mikel not ready to quit Chelsea

After having more playing time under Coach Guus Hiddink, Nigeria’s John Obi Mikel believes his future still lies with Chelsea.

Despite the obvious departure of Hiddink with Italian Antonio Conte taking charge, Mikel who had spent 10 years at Stanford Bridge still believes he can play his way into the new coach team.

With just one year left in the current contract of the mid-fielder, the Super Eagles star is hoping that he can be part of the plans of the incoming new head-coach Antonio Conte.

Mikel`s love of life at Stamford Bridge could explain why, back in January, the 29-year-old turned down moves to Turkish football with the Sun reporting that both Galatasaray and Fenerbache were keen to do a deal for the player and that a reputed salary of £110,000 a week was on the table.

With the change at the managerial helm imminent, there are mixed reactions trailing the possible stay for John Obi Mikel under Antonio Conte.
