It was an unusual Easter Sunday celebrations for the worshippers at
Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral Nnewi, Anambra State, as the state
governor, Chief Willie Obiano and publisher of The AUTHORITY
Newspapers, Dr Ifeanyi Ubah, splashed cash gifts on them.
Dr. Ubah in a speech revealed that work was suspended on the
multimillion naira cathedral he is single-handedly building for the
church because he noticed that there was a structural defect with the
roofing and that the roof cannot really pass an integrity test.
He pointed out that it was for that singular reason that work was
temporarily suspended on the project and he had to go back to the
drawing board to get it right.
Dr. Ubah however told the church that he has got the equipment to
remove the faulty roof and that work would resume on the project in
earnest even as he solicited the prayers of the church.
The oil magnate shocked the worshippers when he announced that a truck
fully loaded with five hundred bags of rice was already waiting in the
church premises to be distributed to those who were in the Easter
Mass. He also backed it up with a donation of one million naira to the
choir.
In a related development, the Anambra State governor, Chief Willie
Obiano who at the occasion highlighted the achievements of his
administration, stressed the need for collective good, rising with the
living Lord to make the society a better place.
He noted that Anambra State is the safest in the country today which
according to him has made the state a haven for investors who want to
take advantage of the peaceful and business friendly environment his
administration has ushered in.
Chief Obiano, marvelled at the developement of the church project, also
announced a ten million naira donation in support of the building
effort.
Earlier, the Bishop of Nnewi Catholic Diocese, Most Rev Hillary Okeke,
during his homily condemned the evil in society which he noted is
fast assuming a monumental proportion.
He said emphatically that President Muhammadu Buhari cannot effect any
change in the country until all Nigerians take it upon themselves to do
good and avoid crime and criminal tendencies.
"There can only be genuine positive change and transformation when we
all embrace positive attitude to life.
It is a collective
responsibility because what you do in your little corner and what I do
here is what makes the nation."
Bishop Okeke particularly commended the state governor for fighting
crime to a standstill which he noted has created an enabling environment
for people to actualise their potentials.
